Managing Bleeding after Forty Days of Nifas
Reaching day forty after childbirth is significant in Hanafi fiqh because it marks the maximum duration of nifas. If bleeding continues beyond forty days, it no longer counts as nifas and must be re‑evaluated using the rules of haiz and istihaza.
Classifying post‑nifas bleeding
If bleeding extends past day forty, assess its duration. Should it last between three and ten days, it is treated as haiz and you will abstain from worship accordingly. If it surpasses ten days, treat the first ten days as haiz and the rest as istihaza. If it is shorter than three days, it is istihaza, and you remain in a state of purity.
Resetting your cycle
Once the nifas period is over, consider any additional bleeding to be part of a new cycle. Your habitual pattern before pregnancy might not apply immediately. Track your cycles for a few months and update your aadat accordingly. Use our Taharat/Dam Calculator to handle unusual gaps between bleedings.
Returning to worship
When you confirm that bleeding beyond day forty is istihaza, you should perform ghusl if you have not already done so and resume prayer and fasting. Continue to monitor the duration of subsequent bleeding to determine whether it fits into a haiz or istihaza category.
Understanding the classification of bleeding after nifas ensures that you maintain your worship obligations while respecting the guidance of Hanafi fiqh.
