Puberty Signs and Religious Responsibility

In Islam, puberty (bulugh) marks the transition from childhood to religious accountability. Recognising the signs of puberty ensures that a girl begins observing compulsory acts such as prayer and fasting at the right time.

Physical signs of puberty

According to Hanafi scholars, puberty is established by physical indicators such as the onset of menstruation, growth of pubic hair, or the emission of sexual discharge. Once any of these occur, a girl is considered an adult in religious terms and must observe all obligatory worship.

Age thresholds

If none of the physical signs appear, puberty is assumed at the completion of fifteen lunar years. Some schools set a lower threshold, but Hanafi jurists generally consider fifteen years as the latest age of bulugh. Parents should educate daughters about the expectations that begin at this age.
