How to Calculate Haiz According to Hanafi Fiqh

Calculating menstruation (haiz) days accurately is essential for performing worship correctly. In Hanafi fiqh, haiz has a minimum duration of three days and a maximum of ten days, while purity (taharat) between cycles must be at least fifteen days. Here’s how to approach calculations:

1. Determine your habitual pattern

Keep track of your cycles over several months. Note how many days bleeding lasts and the length of purity in between. Your average pattern forms your aadat, which helps you classify future cycles.

2. Apply the minimum and maximum rules

If your current bleeding is less than three days, it is treated as istihaza (non‑menstrual) and you remain in the state of purity. If the bleeding continues beyond ten days, only the first ten days are haiz and the rest are istihaza.

3. Use your habit as a guideline

When the bleeding falls within your habitual range (for example, your aadat is seven days and you bleed for seven days), all of it counts as haiz. If your habit is shorter than the current bleeding, treat the excess days beyond your aadat as istihaza.

4. Consult the calculator

To simplify these calculations, use our Haiz Calculator. Enter your habitual haiz and taharat lengths along with the current cycle information. The calculator will identify haiz and istihaza days and provide guidance in both English and Urdu.
