Understanding Istihaza and How to Act
Istihaza refers to any bleeding that isn’t classified as haiz or nifas. It can include spotting between cycles, chronic discharge, or prolonged bleeding beyond the maximum durations. Recognizing istihaza ensures that you continue praying and fasting when required.
Types of istihaza
Istihaza can occur for a variety of reasons, such as hormonal fluctuations, postpartum recovery beyond forty days, or medical conditions. It is not restricted by minimum or maximum durations. Because it doesn’t invalidate worship, it has different rules from haiz and nifas.
Wudu and prayer during istihaza
A woman experiencing istihaza remains in a state of maʹzur (excused person). She must perform a full wudu at each prayer time after the period begins and can offer all obligatory and voluntary prayers until that time ends. If the bleeding stops between prayer times, the earlier wudu is still valid.
Fasting and other worship
Since istihaza does not suspend worship, fasting during Ramadan and making up missed fasts is obligatory. Marital relations are permitted, and recitation of the Quran and entry into a mosque are allowed. However, it is good practice to maintain cleanliness and wear a sanitary pad to minimise discomfort.
