The Minimum Purity Period: Understanding the 15‑Day Taharat Rule

In Hanafi jurisprudence, the period of purity (taharat) between two menstruation cycles has a minimum length of fifteen days. This safeguard ensures that a woman’s bleeding can be distinguished from irregular discharge. A purity gap shorter than fifteen days that occurs between two bleeding episodes will not count as purity at all but will be absorbed into the bleeding period.

Why fifteen days?

Classical jurists derived the fifteen‑day threshold from prophetic guidance and the lived experience of Muslim women during the early centuries of Islam. By setting a minimum purity duration, scholars provided a clear boundary for differentiating between menstrual bleeding and unusual spotting. Anything less than fifteen days of clear discharge between two cycles is assumed to be connected to the previous menstruation, and therefore part of the bleeding.

What if bleeding returns before fifteen days?

If bleeding resumes before fifteen days have passed, treat the entire span—including the days of apparent “purity”—as part of one continuous bleeding event. In other words, you remain in a state of dam (blood), not taharat. The number of days you count toward haiz or istihaza then follows the usual rules: haiz can last up to ten days, and anything beyond that is istihaza. See our Taharat/Dam Calculator for help with tricky cases.

Practical advice for tracking

To apply the fifteen‑day rule accurately, keep a personal calendar or use a cycle tracking app. Record the start and end of your bleeding, as well as the number of days of purity in between. If you notice bleeding less than fifteen days after your last period, consult your habitual pattern and the rules explained above. You can also use our Haiz Calculator to clarify whether you are still in haiz or have entered istihaza.

Understanding the minimum purity period helps you fulfil your worship obligations with confidence and ease. With diligence and the right resources, you can navigate your cycles according to Hanafi teachings.
