Understanding Maʹzur Status: Wudu and Salah in Chronic Discharge
Some women experience chronic vaginal discharge or bleeding that doesn’t meet the criteria for haiz or nifas. In Hanafi fiqh, a person suffering from continuous impurity is known as a maʹzur (excused), and there are specific rules for performing wudu and salah.
Determining maʹzur status
You are considered a maʹzur when the impurity—such as light bleeding or discharge—spans an entire prayer time without stopping long enough to perform wudu and pray. Once this condition is met, you must renew wudu for each prayer time, but your wudu remains valid for the entire prayer period even if discharge continues.
How to perform wudu and prayer
At the start of each prayer time, perform wudu. You may then pray obligatory and voluntary prayers, recite Quran and touch a mushaf. If the impurity stops within a prayer window for long enough to perform wudu and pray, you lose maʹzur status for that period and must cleanse yourself before continuing worship.
Maintaining cleanliness
Use pads or cotton to minimize the discharge’s spread and change them as needed. Even though the impurity is ongoing, you should keep your body and clothing as clean as possible. For more details on maʹzur rulings and practical tips, see our Maʹzur Wudu Reminder.
Understanding maʹzur status helps you uphold your worship obligations without undue hardship and ensures that continuous discharge does not hinder your spiritual practice.
