Observing Ramadan with Haiz: Managing Worship and Fasting

Menstruation is a natural process, and Allah has exempted women from fasting and prayer during this time. However, Ramadan is a precious month, and there are many ways to stay connected to its blessings even when you cannot fast.

Making up missed fasts

You are required to make up the number of fasts missed due to haiz before the next Ramadan. Plan these make‑ups at a comfortable pace throughout the year. Fasting on shorter winter days or during long weekends can make it easier to complete them.

Alternative acts of worship

While you cannot pray or fast, you can engage in dhikr, dua and reading Islamic literature. Listening to Quran recitations, attending virtual lectures and supporting others who are fasting all keep you engaged in the spirit of Ramadan. Consider donating to charity or preparing iftar for friends and family.

Maintaining community connection

Join community iftars, volunteer at mosques or attend nightly lectures. This fosters a sense of belonging and allows you to share the blessings of Ramadan even when not fasting. When your period ends, perform ghusl and resume fasting immediately if within the month.

With the right mindset and planning, you can honour the month of Ramadan fully, regardless of your cycle.
