Preparing Your Daughter for Puberty in Islam
Puberty is a natural milestone in a young girl’s life and marks the beginning of her religious obligations in Islam. Preparing your daughter for this transition requires both knowledge and sensitivity. In this article we share guidance for Muslim parents on recognising puberty, supporting your daughter emotionally and teaching her about the worship responsibilities that accompany maturity.
Recognising the signs of maturity
Physical signs of puberty in girls include the growth of pubic hair, the onset of menstruation and changes in body shape. According to Hanafi fiqh, a girl is considered mature (baligh) when she experiences her first menstrual bleeding or, if that has not occurred, upon reaching the age of fifteen lunar years. Speak with your daughter about what to expect so she understands that these changes are normal and part of Allah’s design. You can learn more about the markers of maturity in our puberty guide.
Open and compassionate conversations
Create an environment where your daughter feels comfortable asking questions. Explain that menstruation is not a punishment but a sign of womanhood, and reassure her that she is not impure as a person. Share the stories of righteous women who navigated these experiences with dignity. Encourage her to track her cycle with a journal or app so she can manage her worship obligations. Our Signs of Puberty article offers additional insights on the emotional and spiritual aspects of this stage.
Teaching worship responsibilities
Once a girl reaches maturity, the obligations of prayer, fasting and modesty become binding. Teach your daughter how to perform ghusl (ritual bath) after her menstruation ends and emphasise the importance of maintaining cleanliness during periods of purity. Explain that during haiz, she is exempt from praying and fasting but should make up missed fasts later. Our Haiz Calculator and Taharat/Dam Calculator can help her understand the rules when her cycle is irregular. Instilling this knowledge early will build confidence and facilitate her spiritual growth.
Preparing your daughter for puberty is a gift of guidance and love. With the right tools and compassionate conversations, you can ensure she enters this new phase empowered and rooted in Islamic teachings.
