Preparing your daughter for puberty: a guide for Muslim parents

How to talk to your daughter about periods, purity and worship before puberty: what to teach, when, and how to keep the conversation warm and practical.

Start before it starts

A girl can reach bulugh from nine lunar years. Many girls get their first period with no warning and are frightened, or keep praying because no one told them the rules. Talking early, and more than once, is kinder and safer.

Set the tone

When Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) cried at getting her period during Hajj, the Prophet ﷺ told her that it is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam (Bukhari). Pass that on: menstruation is natural, nothing to be ashamed of, and it does not make her a lesser worshipper. Explain that she is not "dirty"; only certain acts are paused.

What to teach her

  • The signs of bulugh in the Hanafi school: first period, wet dream, pregnancy, or fifteen lunar years. See signs of puberty.
  • What changes during a period: no prayer (not made up), no fasting (made up later), no touching the Quran; dhikr and dua continue.
  • The limits: haiz lasts 3 to 10 days; bleeding under 3 days is not a period.

Make it an ongoing conversation

Check in after her first few periods. Help her work out her first habit and use the Haiz Calculator together. Make sure she knows she can ask you, or another trusted woman, anything.

For fathers

If you are raising a daughter alone, ask a trusted female relative, teacher or the women's section of your masjid to help, and make sure she has supplies and a private place. Your support still matters.

What age should I talk to my daughter about periods?

Before she can reach bulugh, so by about eight or nine, and again as she grows.

Should she pray during her first period?

No. Once it is haiz (3 days or more), she does not pray. If it stops before 3 days, it was istihaza and she makes up those prayers.
