Signs of Puberty in Islam: When Religious Responsibility Begins

In Islam, religious duties such as prayer and fasting become obligatory upon reaching puberty (bulugh). Girls typically reach bulugh when their first menstruation occurs, but there are other signs and age limits to keep in mind.

Physical signs

The appearance of menstruation is the most obvious marker. However, growth of pubic hair and the development of the breasts are also signs of maturity. Once any of these appear, she is considered balighah (mature) even if she hasn’t started her period.

Age thresholds

If none of the physical signs occur, the onset of religious responsibility is based on age. According to many scholars, puberty is presumed at the age of fifteen lunar years. This ensures that no girl is deprived of the chance to perform acts of worship simply because her body developed later than average.
